In lieu of my desires to help promote our beloved Antique as the next island hide-away
and help bring progress to this place left in the "TURUGBAN" as others say it... here is a site dedicated to realize
my aspirations for a progressive and highly competitive Antique. Photography is a passion I have developed since I was in
High School, and now I want my works to have a place in the sun, for everyone to see and appreciate. Then maybe one day, antiquenos
and antiquenas will learn to value my efforts and themselves become enthused and help me in my crusade to make Antique
mark its spot in the world. Photography is more than a hobby for me. It's a passion, the way I capture and celebrate life.
In this album, I have borrowed some clippings that friends have shared...and in the coming days I will be posting my own ...
thanks to everyone who wishes to join and help Antiqueconnection realize its goals.
My Sincerest Gratitude to Antiquenoconnect1 and 2 from friendster.com for the inspiration
and from whom I have got the desires to make my ideas into a reality. Duro gid nga salamat!!!

Early History: Historians believe that the earliest people
who settled on the island of Panay were tribal Negritos.
The Negritos include the Atis, and at least 5 other tribes of the
Philippines, the Semang of the Malay peninsula, and 12 Andamanese tribes of the Andaman Islands. The Malay term for them is
orang asli, or original people. They are likely the indigenous people of south-east Asia, including New Guinea. Pygmy-sized,
they are numerically and physically among the smallest as well as among the least-known of all living human races.
The Malays are the dominant race which live in Malaysia, Indonesia,
Brunei and the Philippines which, together with Singapore, make up what is called the Malay archipelago. The Malays are traditionally
classified as a member of the Mongoloid race, along with other Asiatic peoples, including Chinese, Mongols, Japanese, Koreans,
Thais, Vietnamese and Burmese. They have black hair and typically darker skin color (usually brown).
There are a number of uses for the term Ati: In Polynesian mythology
(specifically: Maori), Ati (mythology) is a chief who caught and married a Menehune. Ati (tribe) is an indegenous tribe
of Negritos on the island of Panay in the Philippines.
The popular folk legend, Maragtas, gives an account of the early
events in the province. The legend states that in 1212 (Years:1209 1210 1211 - 1212 - 1213 1214 1215 Decades:1180s 1190s 1200s
- 1210s - 1220s 1230s 1240s Centuries: 12th century - 13th century - 14th century ) datus escaped persecution from Sri-Vishaya
Srivijaya (-jaya meaning success or excellence) was an ancient kingdom on the island of Sumatra which was to influence much
of Indonesia, the Malay peninsula, and the Philippines (a Hindu-Malay empire that existed at that time in Borneo. Borneo is
an island, the third largest island in the world, located at the center of Indonesia. Borneo is considered part of the geographic
region of Southeast Asia). Records of its beginning are scarce, and estimates are from 200s to 500s. It ceased to exist around
1400. Srivijaya was centered in the coastal trading center of what is now Palembang. The empire was a thalassocracy and didn't
extend its influence far beyond the coastal areas of the islands of Southeast Asia. These datus, led by Datu Puti, sailed
with their families and communities from Borneo northward and landed on Panay. There, they met the Negrito chieftain, Marikudo.
They bought the island from the chieftain for a golden saduk (headpiece or helmet), and a golden necklace, among other gifts.
The Negritos then retreated to the mountains, while the Borneans settled in the lowlands. Today, the landing is commemorated
every year in Antique in the Binirayan festival The Binirayan festival is an event celebrated in the province of Antique in
the Philippines. The festival, is celebrated every year from December 27 to 30. The Binirayan Festival commemorates the legend
of the arrival of the ten Bornean datus on the island of Panay. (ReferencesPortal, Tadz; Elizalde, Kitz Y. “Antique
revives Binirayan festival” http://www.travelsmart.net/ph/inquirer/issues/jan99/jan21/fea_2.htm)
The island of Panay was then divided into three sakups (districts).
These are Hantik, Aklan, and Irong-Irong. Aklan became the present-day Aklan and Capiz, Irong-Irong became Iloilo, and Hantik
(also called Hamtik or Hamtic) became Antique. Hantik was named for the large red ants found on the island called lantik-lantik.
The sakup of Hantik was given to Datu Sumakwel, one of the ten datus,
and who, according to tradition, was the oldest and wisest of them. The three sakups were later governed as a political unit
called the Confederation of Madia-as, also under Datu Sumakwel.
Datu Sumakwel founded the town of Malandog, considered to be the
first Malay settlement in the country. Malandog is now a barangay in the present-day municipality of Hamtic, which was named
after the historic sakup.
Antique faces the Sulu Sea The Sulu Sea is a large sea in the southwestern
area of the Philippines. It is separated from the South China Sea in the northeast by Palawan, and from the Celebes Sea in
the southeast by the Sulu Archipelago. Borneo is found to the southwest and Visayas to the northeast.
Antique was one of the three old sakups (districts) of Panay before
the Spanish colonizers arrived in the islands. The Antique was then known as Hantik, which was named from the large red ants
found on the island, called lantik-lantik
Antique is subdivided into 18 municipalities:
Anini-y
Barbaza Belison
Bugasong Caluya
Culasi Hamtic
Laua-an Libertad
Pandan Patnongon
San Jose San Remigio
Sebaste Sibalom
Tibiao Tobias Fornier (Dao) Valderrama
